DEHORNING

The Matobo Rhino Trust supports the Rhino dehorning program conducted by Dambari Trust.  The objective is to dehorn ALL the Rhino, both Black and White, resulting in the risk to reward ratio increasing dramatically.  In other words, poachers need to take high risks to poach Rhino in Matopos, with the likelihood of only obtaining a small amount of horn for their efforts.

Dehorning is carried out on an annual basis, as the horn does slowly grow back. The operation also provides the chance for some research, Rhino recording - Males/Females, ages and condition.  All rhinos are tagged after dehorning which enhances monitoring and identification.
